WHAT IS THE HOUSE EDGE?

The house edge is a term derived from the so-called „applied mathematics“. In other words, the house edge is a statistical advantage that the casino holds over a player.
In short, „the house always wins“. The house edge indicates the average advantage that the casino establishment has over you.
Even so, by crunching the numbers we came up with a list of games that can provide you with lucrative returns. Here are the games of chance that can improve your chances of winning millions of dollars.

  1. Video poker – 0.50 % to 5.00%
video poker is one of the youngest games of chance. But, this game can also bring lucrative rewards your way. However, you’ll have to forget about „gut plays“ or similar forms of gambling.

If you play video poker by relying on skill and strategy, a royal flush will come your way every so often. The most rewarding variations of video poker for american players are jacks or better and deuces wild.

Online slots – 1.00% to 10.00%
it is no secret that slot machines are the undisputed kings of casino venues. Modern-day slots come with a wide array of interactive features and extras.

Progressive jackpot slots are a high variance game, and they offer a huge house edge. So, stick to the classic slots and play on the maximum number of paylines. By doing so, you maximize your chances of winning a large sum.

Baccarat – from 1.06%
A favorite of the agent 007 – the famous baccarat. Created in italy during the middle ages, this game is steeped in history. At the same time, the rigid rules and the basic gameplay of baccarat allow players to collect the wins on a frequent basis.

If you place your bets on the player, the house edge goes down to 1.24%. Even better, you could bet on the banker and have the house edge down to 1.06%.

Craps – 1.40% to 5.00%
on the other side of the difficulty spectrum is an exotic-looking game – the craps. The house edge and the returns in this game vary considerably. To clarify, craps come with many rules and forms of placing a wager.

Yet, players who stick to the basic ‘pass or come’ bets stand the best chances of getting away with a win. The house edge when playing craps ranges from 1.4% to 5%.

Three card poker – from 1.50%
created in 1994, this all-american favorite is an exciting and entertaining new variation of poker. As the name implies, 3 cards go the player while the house also receives 3 cards.

When playing three card poker, casino goers play against the dealer. Furthermore, it is best to get acquainted with the terminology before starting to play this game. The likes of ante-bet, pair plus, or king/queen high could confuse the novice players.

Roulette (single zero) – 2.70%
reminiscent of the old grandeur, roulette is a casino game that offers some of the lowest house advantages in the market. After all, it is no coincidence that james bond always picks roulette and his lucky number 17.

As you probably know, there are two main types of roulette. The american roulette comes with one extra field (double zero). Thus, this type offers the house edge of 5.26%. On the other hand, the european or french roulette comes with the house edge of 2.7%.

Blackjack (single deck) – from 1.50%
one of the most popular casino games is the blackjack, in all its numerous variations. Above all, this table game is easy to learn. By using a combination of knowledge and judgment – you could lower the house edge to 1%.

The single deck blackjack is a game you’ll enjoy playing. Just make sure you don’t go bust early on!

Pai gow poker – from 2.50%
even though some casino experts refer to pai gow as the frankenstein, there is no doubt that this game of chance can sway the odds in your favor. A unique mix of the chinese domino game and poker, pai gow presents a modern twist on the ancient gambling forms.

The house edge of 2.5% is a great head start, but you will need knowledge and skill to come away with large prizes.

Backgammon – from 4.82% to 6.39%
speaking of ancient games, the backgammon is another example of the classic games of chance. More importantly, backgammon also offers favorable, i.E. A loose house edge.

Since backgammon is a combination of a table game and a dice game, the house edge can vary. Needless to say, your playing style will also affect the returns.

Caribbean stud poker – from 5.00%
the tropical-themed carribean stud poker is another interesting entry on our list. The house edge with this game starts at 5%. Similar to the three card poker, this one also faces you against the dealer.

Casino house edge explained

Which casino games has the lowest house edge, casino games house edge.

Did you know that casinos always have the upper hand? It doesn’t matter which game you play or where you play it, casinos pay out less money than they take in. Even when a game is completely fair, the rules are set up to statistically favour the casino. Then again, the presence of the house edge doesn’t have to dash your hopes entirely. Chances are you’ve had great days at the casino yourself despite the inherent house edge. Yet when you fully understand how the house edge works, you minimize its effects. Continue reading this guide and our gambling experts will reveal how to make the most out of the house edge.

Understanding the house edge

Casinos offer outstanding entertainment. Even if you don’t gamble, it’s fun to watch visitors risk it all and manage to defy the odds. Naturally like all businesses, casinos exist to make a handsome profit for the owners. This is by no means a recent development. Casino games, including baccarat, roulette, and blackjack, have been popular for more than a century and the house edge, which is dependent on the rules, hasn’t changed much.

When you play any of the more popular table games, the casino’s advantage is fairly consistent. Although this is generally true, minor rule changes can considerably alter the advantage of the house. For example, european roulette has a reasonable house edge of 2.70% but that number jumps to 5.26% when you play the american version due to the addition of an extra number on the wheel. Yet what do these numbers mean to you? The house edge percentage tells you the casino’s profit margin. For instance, when you play double exposure blackjack with a posted 0.69% house edge, the casino can expect to make a £0.69 profit for every £100 wagered on average.

With this in mind, the house edge probably won’t reflect your individual experience. You could bring £100 to the table and lose it all or you could win a few hands in a row and be up £500 fairly quickly. Due to variance in the short term, it could take thousands of blackjack hands before casinos achieve this profit margin.

Even though the casino has a mathematical upper hand over players, you can minimize this advantage when you understand the house edge.

Accounting for variance

Variance can mean a lot of things to different people. While statisticians define it as an amount that’s equal to the square of the standard deviation, we’ll spare you the boring university statistics lesson. In practical terms, it means diverging from the average. Look at it this way. All games of chance are completely random. When you roll dice at the craps table, the laws of physics dictate where they end up. Assuming a game is fair, which it will be at a licensed casino, spinning a roulette wheel and shuffling a deck of cards are also random acts. Of course, on the internet, the RNG or random number generator brings you the same level of randomness.

With randomness in mind, you would expect certain results. For example, if you roll a single six-sided die 60 times, you would probably expect it to land on 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 about 10 times each. If you try this, don’t be shocked if you get different results each time even if you shake the dice in the same random way every time. The fact is there is variance in the results. In all likelihood, your patience will wear thin long before you witness a distribution that perfectly matches the odds. Nonetheless, this is what makes it possible to win or lose in the short term, even if casinos win over time.

Finding the house edge

Which casino games has the lowest house edge, casino games house edge.

The house edge is never a secret. When playing fruit machines offline, you’ll typically find the return to player or RTP % posted right on the machine. The RTP is another way of expressing the house edge. It tells you what percentage of real money wagers will be returned to players in the form of winnings. If you encounter a 97.5% RTP, just subtract this number from 100 to calculate the house edge, which would be 2.5%. Again, these pictures reflect the long-term picture and are in no way representative of your individual returns. Online slot machine players can typically find these figures listed in either the help section or within each game’s instructions.

If you are playing table games at a live casino, you can ask a member of the staff for a brochure that explains the rules, odds, and house advantage. Internet players can read the game rules on the landing page or check out the sitemap to find an RTP or house edge guide.

Why you should believe the house edge

The numbers don’t lie, especially when you play at a reputable casino that’s licensed and regulated by the UK gambling commission. Casinos not only post the house edge so you can make informed decisions, but these results are put to the test by independent testing agencies. You can count on these auditors to test the games, software, data, random number generators, and physical gaming equipment to ensure that games are fair and the house edge is exactly as advertised. When you play online, you can usually find monthly reports indicating the house edge or RTP for individual games and the site as a whole.

Now that you thoroughly understand how the house edge works, you’ll want to use it to your advantage. The means choosing games that offer the lowest house edge and avoiding games that stack the odds against you.

Online vs. Offline play

Which casino games has the lowest house edge, casino games house edge.

Even though the internet gambling industry continues to experience explosive growth year after year, many brits much prefer a night out at a live casino. While online and offline play both have their advantages, the overall house edge is often a little better for players on the internet. That’s because you can find obscure variations of games with more favourable house rules, especially if you play blackjack. Slot machine fans will also find a wider variety of games with superior payouts on the internet. In addition, online players have access to hundreds of sites, which makes it easy to shop around for the best games with the lowest house advantage.

If you’re a beginner, you’ll likely have an easier time winning online. Not only is there less pressure, but you can refer to game and strategy guides as you play. Don’t forget that you can reduce the house edge of many games by taking advantage of bonuses, promotions, and loyalty programs on offer.

Typical house edge of popular casino games

baccarat 1.06% american roulette 5.26% classic blackjack 0.13% craps 1.36% double exposure blackjack 0.69% european roulette 2.70% let it ride 3.51% jacks or better video poker 0.46% keno 20%-40% super fun 21 0.94% sic bo 2.78% vegas strip blackjack 0.35%

Improving your odds

When comparing casino games, it’s important to know that the posted house edge can be misleading. Since not all bets within a game have the same house edge, you can improve your odds by sticking to the most favourable wagers. For example, in punto banco baccarat bets on the banker have a 1.06% house edge, bets on the player have a 1.24% house edge, and bets on a tie have a 14.4%. If you bet on the banker every time, the casino’s edge will be miniscule.

Understanding the house edge: which casino games pay the best

Which casino games has the lowest house edge, casino games house edge.

Which casino games has the lowest house edge, casino games house edge.

Casino games are all different. While the house usually wins, some games are definitely better than others for the player. Today we’re ranking these games in terms of “house edge,” which means how much the casino wins over time.

Generally speaking, if you can play a game with a 1% house edge, you have a MUCH better chance of winning over time than if you’re playing a game with a 5% house edge. The casinos look at these games as “applied mathematics.” smart players do too.

How easy are these games to play?

Combined with the house edge, we’re also listing a simplified “difficulty index” --- namely simple, moderate, difficult --- to explain how easy each game is to play correctly. Generally speaking, the more difficult a game is to play correctly, the better it returns, although there are some exceptions.

GROUP 1: HIGH HOUSE EDGE

KENO (simple)

Keno is a game where you pick one or more numbers from a grid of 80. The house chooses 20 numbers, and you’re paid off according to how many matches you get. This is usually the worst game in most casinos percentage wise --- often in the range of 20% - 40% house edge.

Which casino games has the lowest house edge, casino games house edge.

SLOT MACHINES (simple)

The house return on slot games varies from 3% to 20%. It is largely impossible to tell just by looking what a given machine pays. In general, the higher denomination you play, the better the odds.

GROUP 2: MEDIUM HOUSE EDGE

Which casino games has the lowest house edge, casino games house edge.

ROULETTE (simple to moderate)

The house edge at roulette depends on how many zeroes are on the wheel and also the local rules. When a wheel has both a zero and double zero, the house edge is 5.26%. When the wheel has just a single zero, the house has a 2.7% edge. In france, if you bet on 18 of the outcomes (i.E. Red or black or high or low or odd or even) and the ball ends up on zero, your bet is “en prison,” reducing the odds against you to 1.35%.

Most of the bets return the same amount on a roulette wheel so there is no skill involved in choosing which way to bet. The skill arises in finding the game with the best rules. You don’t want to be playing a game with a 5.26% edge when nearby the “same” game can be found with a 1.35% edge.)

GROUP 3: LOW HOUSE EDGE

BACCARAT (simple)

Baccarat has many formats and often many side bets. The basic game requires you to bet on ‘player’ (1.2% house edge) or ‘banker’ (1% house edge.) that’s it. The rules about whether or not extra cards are taken are a little complicated, but the dealer does all that. After a while, you’ll learn these rules. The rules are good to know in case the dealer does make a mistake, but that is pretty rare. The trickiest part of the game is simply avoiding the other bets---i.E., betting a tie (14% house edge) or a pair (10% or 11% house edge depending on the number of decks.)

There are some baccarat tips, but baccarat game is an exception to the rule that the more difficult a game is to play, the worse the odds.

Which casino games has the lowest house edge, casino games house edge.

CRAPS (simple)

Although the craps table is filled with many opportunities to make exotic bets, if you limit yourself to PASS or COME bets and take full ‘odds,’ it’s really pretty simple. (you can bet the DON’T side of these same bets, for slightly better odds. But if you’re new to the game, it’s better to go with the flow and bet the way most others are betting.) the basic house edge is 1.4% on these bets. After one roll, you can take odds (which has a 0% house edge). Percentage-wise, taking odds lowers the odds against you. The higher the odds that are allowed, the better the odds are for the player.

The exotic bets on a craps table generally offer terrible odds --- often in the 10% to 17% range. Avoid these. They are fun when they hit, but the chances of winning are slim.

Which casino games has the lowest house edge, casino games house edge.

BLACKJACK USING BLACKJACK STRATEGY (moderate)

Basic blackjack strategy consists of using some basic rules to guide your decisions based on your cards and the dealer’s up card. Different numbers of decks and different sets of rules have different basic strategies.

As you can see from the example chart below, there are hundreds of combinations for you to memorize --- for each basic strategy. (this particular chart is based on 4-8 decks where the dealer stands on soft 17. The chart for another number of decks or hitting on soft 17 would be a little different.)

But if you do have the blackjack chart memorized the game itself can vary between 0.2% and 2%, depending on the rules of the game.

GROUP 4: GOOD PLAYERS ACTUALLY CAN HAVE AN ADVANTAGE AT THESE GAMES

Which casino games has the lowest house edge, casino games house edge.

POKER (very difficult)

Although often found in casinos, you are not playing against the casino when you play poker. You are playing against the other players and the house takes a small percentage of the pots (the rake) as their fee for providing the game.

If you’re sufficiently better than the other players and can overcome the house rake, you can actually make a pretty nice living playing poker. That’s the good news. The bad news is that it’s not easy to be that much better than other players. Some very smart players have invested thousands of hours studying and practicing in order to become skilled.
If you sit down at the same table as them, good luck! They can easily beat you when they get dealt good cards, and they also can often beat you when they get bad cards.

BLACKJACK WHILE COUNTING CARDS (difficult)

Card counting consists of keeping track of the ratio of high cards (tens and aces) versus low cards (2-6) that have been played. When there are extra high cards stillremaining to be played, the odds favor the player and he bets more and uses a special strategy. When there are extra low cards, the player bets the table minimum (or leaves the table). Depending on how good the player is and the rules of the game, you can get up to a 2% edge doing this.

It is also fairly easy for casinos to figure out what you are doing. While card counting is legal in most jurisdictions, this is not the case everywhere. Most casinos are allowed to kick you out if they think you are counting cards. So don’t do any mistakes at blackjack.

Which casino games has the lowest house edge, casino games house edge.

SPORTS OR RACE BETTING (difficult)

Betting on sports involves determining the likelihood that one team, person, or animal will beat another in some sort of contest. This is more than just who is going to win. It involves a “price,” where to bet on the favorite you have to pay more to win less and to bet on an underdog you get to pay less to win more. The sports books are very good at setting a line so that regardless of whoever actually wins, the books still do okay. If you can handicap better than the books can, you can make some real money betting on sports. But not many people are successful at it.

VIDEO POKER (difficult)

This is my game. Video poker involves figuring out how much each machine returns with perfect play (that’s not too hard if you have software), learning the best play for each of the possible hands you are dealt (that can take some time and players differ in their abilities to learn to play perfectly), finding out how much the player’s clubs return to you (sometimes this is easy, sometimes not), and checking out which promotions are in effect (this is time-consuming if you’re checking several casinos, but not difficult).

Once you’ve done that, if the sum of all these things exceeds 100% (which happens, but not all that frequently), you need to sit down and play --- surviving the bankroll swings along the way.

Every video poker game is different, but there are some general video poker tips. You do not play deuces wild the same as you play double double bonus or the same as you play jacks or better, etc. In fact, every pay schedule is different.

For a game like double bonus, for example, if you receive 25 coins for a straight, you play many hands differently than if you only receive 20 coins for a straight.

These things are all able to be learned, but it takes time and study. If you wish to become good at video poker, plan to pay your dues getting good.

The house edge is low for this game, but is different in the different forms. What is casino house edge?

Also known as vigorish or casino odds or house take or house advantage, house edge is a casino game factor that offers a long-term mathematical advantage to the operator. It is one of the elements that determine the commercial success of an online casino and hence, built to work in the casino’s favor. The house edge of a game determines how much it would pay out on an average over a period of time. No matter in which casino you choose to play or which game you want to play, there’s no escaping the house edge. It is further impacted by the wagering requirement fixed by an online casino.

However, players always have this advantage of being able to put their house edge knowledge to use prior to wagering real money. Games with high house edge pay out less money on an average as compared to games with low house edge. To ease your quest for low house edge casino games, we at casinowebsites have come up with this detailed listicle. Try out the games and discover more. Understanding the house edge

What is a casino?

Which casino games has the lowest house edge, casino games house edge.

I’ve heard it described many ways. Some people say it’s “A place to have fun” others say its “disneyland for adults”. No matter what you think a casino is, keep this in mind. A casino is a business. BIG BUSINESS!! Bob stupak, the former owner of vegas world casino, told US and world report, “its our duty to extract as much money from the customer as we can and send them home with a smile on their face.”

So, how does the casino go about extracting money from you? Do they cheat you?
NO!

They don’t have to cheat because except for blackjack and video poker, every casino game has a built-in profit on every bet. This is known as the house edge or casino advantage.

Every bet you make has a certain probability of winning or losing. If you bet on the flip of a coin, the probability of heads or tails is 50-50. This would be an even money bet. If you bet a dollar and was paid a dollar when you won, you would be paid TRUE ODDS. However, if the casino only paid you 95 cents every time you won instead of a dollar the house edge would be 2.5%. Simply put, the house edge is the difference between the true odds and the odds that the casino pays you when you win.

Look at this it shows the casino’s advantage for different casino games. All are fixed except for blackjack and video poker. These two games actually can have a positive payback depending on the skill of the player and the rules or payback table.

Look at the game of roulette. You will see that the house edge is 5.26% for the double zero game. This is how we figure the edge. In the game, there are 36 numbers plus the 0 and 00. The odds of you winning is one in 38 or 37 to 1. If you win the casino pays you 35 for your dollar bet. You keep your original dollar and are paid an additional $35 returning $36. The difference is two dollars (38 minus 36). Divide the $2 by 38 which is the true odds and you come up with the house edge of 5.26%. So you could actually cover all the numbers on the layout and still lose money. These are great odds for the house but not for you. Games like roulette, craps, big six a have a fixed percentage because one roll or spin will never change the outcome. There will always be 38 numbers on a roulette layout and 12 numbers on a pair of dice.

Blackjack is in a different category because every time a card comes out of the shoe, it changes the makeup of the cards remaining. The advantage can shift from player to house depending on which cards have been played and the skill in which you play your cards. Video poker also is based on skill. If you play the perfect strategy, there are actually some games that have a positive return based on their pay table.

From the above chart, you can see why a casino does not have to cheat to make money. Does that mean you will lose every time? No of course not. If you did you wouldn't keep coming back. However, in the long run, the casino will win on negative expectation games.

Until next time remember:
luck comes and goes. Knowledge stays forever.

HOUSE EDGE

Which casino games has the lowest house edge, casino games house edge.

Figure 1 indicates the house edge (or “house advantage,” or “H/A”) for some well known games. The house edge is commonly understood as the percentage of total initial player wagers the casino expects to earn over the long run if all players use perfect strategy against the game. For those games that have exactly one wagering opportunity, the house edge refers to the edge for that wager.

This is the case with the percents given for casino war, and roulette, as well as keno, slots and video poker games. If a table game has a main game and a side bet, then it is usually the house edge of the main game that is quoted as the house edge for the overall game. For example, three card poker has both the ante/play and the pair plus wagers; the stated house edge is for the main game, the ante/play bet. Blackjack and craps also have more than one wagering opportunity

BLACKJACK HOUSE EDGE

The house edge for blackjack is based on the specific rules for the game played; it is not a number that is valid for all blackjack games. For the percent presented in figure 1, blackjack is played with 8 decks, the dealer stands on soft 17, the player can split twice (up to three hands) and double after a split. Split aces receive one card each, and the player cannot surrender.

Which casino games has the lowest house edge, casino games house edge.

Blackjack actually has a second wagering opportunity that very few players use and it is not considered on the house edge. Players, dealers and casino management don’t think about insurance properly; insurance is a separate wagering opportunity in blackjack that is independent of the main bet. It is a side bet. It is a wager that is available to the player any time the dealer shows an ace. The player is paid 2-to- 1 on the wager if the dealer has a face card under the ace, otherwise the player loses. There is no theoretical link between the main bet and the insurance bet. The house edge for the insurance wager on an 8 deck game is 7.47%.

CRAPS HOUSE EDGE

For craps it is not possible to give an overall house edge. Craps is a hodge-podge of wagers, some good and some bad. If we focus on one wager then we can indicate the house edge. The pass line wager has a house edge of 1.41% and that’s what is included in figure 1. The “any craps” wager has a house edge of 11.11%.

Which casino games has the lowest house edge, casino games house edge.
3 CARD POKER HOUSE EDGE

For three card poker, there are two wagers: the ante/play bet and the pair plus bet. The ante/play bet has a house edge of 3.37% (using the 1-4-5 bonus pay table) and the pair plus bet has a house edge of 7.28% (using the 1-3-6-30-40 pay table). For some games, the player has to play perfect basic strategy to get the house edge. For example, blackjack, let it ride, pai gow poker, and three card poker all are games with a player strategy. Casino war, craps and roulette have no player strategy, so the house edge is inescapably the long-run experience the players will have. Any variations in this experience are simply expressions of the volatility.

Note that even if a strategy is trivial, there will still be player errors. In three card poker, the correct strategy is to raise with Q-6-4 off-suit or higher and to fold all other hands. The strategies for blackjack, let it ride and pai gow poker are complex. The more complicated the strategy, the more errors the players will make. Some errors are very costly on simple games. Error rates translate to returns to the casino higher than the “theoretical win” predicted by the house edge.

SLOTS HOUSE EDGE & VIDEO POKER HOUSE EDGE

For slots and video poker, the house edge is also called the “hold” of the game. The use of the word “hold” as a synonym for house edge causes great confusion. The word “hold” has an entirely different meaning for table games, to be discussed later. The house edge for each slot is set by the casino by referencing several optional pay tables supplied with the slot.

Pay tables and other features of a slot are created by a mathematician who analyzed the game and built a spreadsheet for the slot machine, called a PARS sheet (PARS = “pay table and reel strip). A PARS shows the game manufacture how to create the machine by indicating exactly how each reel strip is set up and how much each combination pays when it is hit. A common misconception is that somehow slots are set up to be hot or cold at certain times. In fact, each location on each reel is equally likely to occur on each spin, and this doesn’t change. The changes are set in advance by engineering the design of the reels and the payouts for combinations.

Typically a casino can choose from a menu of possibilities and get a house edge for a slot anywhere from 2% to 20%. Slots that have a house edge under 4% are called “loose.” slots that have a house edge of 8% or higher are often referred to as “tight.” for video poker games, the game is dealt with a single deck of cards. By law, the deal of these cards must behave statistically in every way just like the game as dealt live. There can be no weighting of the cards or other deviations. Each card must be equally likely to be dealt any time it remains on the deck. Video poker comes in a wide variety of versions. The most common and most popular variants are jacks or better, bonus, double bonus, deuces wild, and joker poker. In each case the house edge is determined by the payouts for various poker hands.

Which casino games has the lowest house edge, casino games house edge.

For example, playing jacks or better, there is a payout for any final poker hand that consists of a pair of jacks or higher. Figure 2 gives the pay table that knowledgeable video poker players seek out. The player must play 5 credits to get the listed payouts. Note that these payouts are “for-1.” the player’s credits are deducted from his total before the hand begins. For those who wager less than “max coin” the player receives a lower payout for a royal flush, typically 250 instead of 800.

The house edge for this pay table is 0.46%, based on the player playing perfect strategy. A perfect strategy is quite complicated and all but a few experts play a considerably worse game. In practice, a house edge of about 1% is earned by the casino. This pay table is referred to as jacks or better “9/6,” with the 9/6 referring to the payouts for a full house (9) and flush (6). The most common pay table for jacks or better is 8/5, which has a house edge of 2.70% playing perfect jacks or better strategy. At some casinos you will see a 7/5 (house edge = 3.85%) or even a 6/5 (house edge = 5.00%) pay table for jacks or better. I have never seen a pay table tighter than 6/5.

For most video poker games, pay tables exist that have close to a 0% break even house edge, or in some cases, have a slight player edge. For example, 10/6 jacks or better (player edge = 0.70%) can occasionally be found. Such video poker games are offered at a low denomination and may be placed close to the front of the casino, as a loss leader. In some cases, professional players will target video poker games that offer these great odds. It should be clear that if a casino is using a “cash back for points” marketing system, together with offering a video poker game with a break-even house edge, the expert player will turn the house edge well in his favor.

The house edge is an exact number that can be worked out precisely for most games. For many games, the edge can be determined by using a spreadsheet. For some games, the house edge is determined by doing an exhaustive analysis of every possible combination that can occur in the game. This may require extensive spreadsheet analysis. Typically the mathematics for slot machines is done this way. The analysis may require a computer to go through each combination of events, work out the proper strategy for that combination, and keep track of the overall results. This is commonly referred to as “running a cycle.” video poker is analyzed by running a cycle.

Which casino games has the lowest house edge, casino games house edge.

Whenever possible, the house edge is obtained by a complete spreadsheet analysis or by running a cycle (or both, just to be sure). A computer simulation is often used to confirm the exact theoretical results. For a few games, the toughest games, the rules and strategy are so complex that the house edge can only be approximately determined by computer simulation. Once casino management knows the house edge, they will have a sense for how much money they can make from the game based on the total wagers. But, the house edge tells other stories as well. If the house edge is too close to 0%, then the casino won’t make enough money from the game. If the house edge is too high, then players will lose their money too fast and abandon the game, and once again the casino won’t make enough money from the game.

The house edge is another balancing act, just like the “hit frequency” and “payout” dilemma described in the lottery examples. The house edge has to be low enough to make players want to play the game and high enough so that the casino earns a reasonable amount of profit from the game.

The standard table games consisting of baccarat, blackjack and craps, all offer wagers with a house edge under 1.5%. There are very few table games that make it into a casino with a house edge under 1.5% and those that do are mostly blackjack variants. Well known examples are spanish 21, super fun 21, and blackjack switch. For example, with liberal rules and perfect play, blackjack switch has a house edge under 0.20%. In practice, due to player errors, blackjack switch often returns in excess of 3%. Spanish 21 and super fun 21 also have huge error rates. Blackjack variants also move very quickly, generating many more decisions per hour than other games, making the games affordable for the casino.

ROULETTE HOUSE EDGE

Likewise, for table games, the edge can be over 5%, but the game better move very slowly and have a compelling reason to play. Otherwise, a house edge over 5% is likely to burn players out too fast. The game mississippi stud has a house edge close to 5% and a huge error rate. It is relatively new and popular in some markets, but does not seem to be catching hold. Caribbean stud has a house edge over 5.2% and has been steadily losing market share for years.

Roulette maintains its popularity, even though every wager at roulette has a fixed house edge of 5.26%. The house edge can easily be computed by hand as follows. First note that without the 0 and 00 spots on the wheel, the payouts for roulette are designed to be absolutely fair based on a wheel with 36 spots: a 0.00% house edge. By putting both 0 and 00 on the wheel, there are two bad spots on the wheel out of 38 total spots. So, for double-0 roulette, the house edge is 2/38 = 5.26%. For single-0 roulette, the edge is 1/37 = 2.70%.

It is not quite true that every roulette wager has the same house edge; there is an exception that we note. Double 0-roulette sometimes offers a wager called “first 5” that pays 6-to-1. This wins if any of 0, 00, 1, 2, or 3 hits. It loses if any other number is hit. The house edge for this wager is 3/38 = 7.89%. The great majority of roulette players know better than to take this bet, just as most blackjack players know to never take insurance.

For games with side bets, it is usually the case that the main game has a lower house edge than the side bet. Moreover, the lower the edge on the main game, the higher the house edge on the side bet. Side bets do not have the same practical limitations in the size of their payouts or house edge as the main bet. A 3% edge on the main game can easily go with a 7% house edge on the side bet, for example.

As an example, consider the pair plus bet on three card poker. The main game in three card poker (with the standard 1-4-5 bonus table) has house edge 3.37%. Shuffle master includes pay tables for the pair plus with house edges varying from 2.32% to 7.28%. When three card poker was first introduced, the 2.32% version of pair plus was most common. Now the 7.28% version is the main one used. There is

Logic to this increase; from the casino’s side they earn a lot more from a well established and loyal player base; from the player’s side the change is just “cosmetic” and they don’t notice it.

For our lottery examples, it is easy to compute the house edge by running a cycle. That is, we see what happens after every ticket is sold for each lottery. Whether it is lottery 1 or lottery 2, there are 1 million tickets, and each cost $1. So a full cycle corresponds to an investment of $1,000,000 (1 million dollars) from the players. For each lottery, $900,000 is returned in prize money: there are either 9 tickets worth $100,000 each, or 900,000 tickets worth $1 each. For each lottery, the state keeps the remaining $100,000. Thus, for each lottery, the house edge is ($100,000) / ($1,000,000) = 10%.

House edge of casino games compared

Introduction

Which casino games has the lowest house edge, casino games house edge.

What is the house edge?

The house edge is defined as the ratio of the average loss to the initial bet. The house edge is the ratio of money lost to total money wagered. In some games the beginning wager is not necessarily the ending wager. For example in blackjack, let it ride, and caribbean stud poker, the player may increase their bet when the odds favor doing so. In these cases the additional money wagered is not figured into the denominator for the purpose of determining the house edge, thus increasing the measure of risk.

The following table shows the house edge of most casino games. For games partially of skill perfect play is assumed. See below the table for a definition of the house edge.

Guide to house edge

The reason that the house edge is relative to the original wager, not the average wager, is that it makes it easier for the player to estimate how much they will lose. For example if a player knows the house edge in blackjack is 0.6% he can assume that for every $10 wager original wager he makes he will lose 6 cents on the average. Most players are not going to know how much their average wager will be in games like blackjack relative to the original wager, thus any statistic based on the average wager would be difficult to apply to real life questions.

The conventional definition can be helpful for players determine how much it will cost them to play, given the information they already know. However the statistic is very biased as a measure of risk. In caribbean stud poker, for example, the house edge is 5.22%, which is close to that of double zero roulette at 5.26%. However the ratio of average money lost to average money wagered in caribbean stud is only 2.56%. The player only looking at the house edge may be indifferent between roulette and caribbean stud poker, based only the house edge. If one wants to compare one game against another I believe it is better to look at the ratio of money lost to money wagered, which would show caribbean stud poker to be a much better gamble than roulette.

Many other sources do not count ties in the house edge calculation, especially for the don’t pass bet in craps and the banker and player bets in baccarat. The rationale is that if a bet isn’t resolved then it should be ignored. I personally opt to include ties although I respect the other definition.

Element of risk

For purposes of comparing one game to another I would like to propose a different measurement of risk, which I call the "element of risk." this measurement is defined as the average loss divided by total money bet. For bets in which the initial bet is always the final bet there would be no difference between this statistic and the house edge. Bets in which there is a difference are listed below.

Element of risk

Standard deviation

The standard deviation is a measure of how volatile your bankroll will be playing a given game. This statistic is commonly used to calculate the probability that the end result of a session of a defined number of bets will be within certain bounds.

The standard deviation of the final result over n bets is the product of the standard deviation for one bet (see table) and the square root of the number of initial bets made in the session. This assumes that all bets made are of equal size. The probability that the session outcome will be within one standard deviation is 68.26%. The probability that the session outcome will be within two standard deviations is 95.46%. The probability that the session outcome will be within three standard deviations is 99.74%. The following table shows the probability that a session outcome will come within various numbers of standard deviations.

I realize that this explanation may not make much sense to someone who is not well versed in the basics of statistics. If this is the case I would recommend enriching yourself with a good introductory statistics book.

Standard deviation

0.25 0.1974
0.50 0.3830
0.75 0.5468

3.50 0.9996
3.75 0.9998

Although I do not mention hold percentages on my site the term is worth defining because it comes up a lot. The hold percentage is the ratio of chips the casino keeps to the total chips sold. This is generally measured over an entire shift. For example if blackjack table x takes in $1000 in the drop box and of the $1000 in chips sold the table keeps $300 of them (players walked away with the other $700) then the game's hold is 30%. If every player loses their entire purchase of chips then the hold will be 100%. It is possible for the hold to exceed 100% if players carry to the table chips purchased at another table. A mathematician alone can not determine the hold because it depends on how long the player will sit at the table and the same money circulates back and forth. There is a lot of confusion between the house edge and hold, especially among casino personnel.

The following table shows the average hands per hour and the house edge for comp purposes various games. The house edge figures are higher than those above, because the above figures assume optimal strategy, and those below reflect player errors and average type of bet made.

Moreover, the carribean stud poker features the jackpot bet. By placing a bet on the JP box, you could become eligible for the life-changing jackpot.

Casinos games with the lowest house edge

When you open an online casino or when you enter a land-based casino you see hundreds of games. Casinos offer you classic casino games like roulette, blackjack, poker, bacarrat, keno, bingo and pontoon. But they also offer a wide variety of slot machines and video slot games. At the average online casino you find over 500 different video slot and classic slot games. This is much more than you will ever find at a land-based casino. Online casinos also offer more varieties of classic casino games. There are casinos that offer 10 different blackjack variants in their online casino. And most online casinos also offer a selection of live casino games with real dealers at real tables. But before you start playing it could be important to know the casino games with the lowest house edge.

When you play casino games with a low house edge you have a higher chance of winning money. When the house edge of a game is high that is disadvantageous for you as a player.

It is very important to know the house edge of the games you start to play. As a player you can make better choices when you know the house edge of the game you play. You can play the right game or bet strategy at blackjack or video poker. A good strategy can lower the advantage of the house (the casino).

What does the house edge mean at a casino game?

Every casino game needs to have a house edge. When a casino has no house edge it could go bankrupt within a day or a week after opening. The house edge is an advantage that casino have integrated in their games. This is the advantage the casino has compared with the person who plays the game. The house edge is always a percentage.

Casinos are commercial companies and their business model is to make money. So every game needs to have a certain house edge. As mentioned, without a house edge the casino would go bankrupt.

Let me give you an example

Imagine a casino game with a 4% house edge. This means that the casino has an average revenue of €4 on every €100 played on this game. €4 of €100 is 4% house edge. Keep notice that this is an average revenue. It could happen that a certain game has a negative profit for a long period. And it can also have a period where it does not payout. The 4% house edge is an average number over a very long period.

The lower the house edge the better the game is for you as a player. And when the house edge is high, the casino earns more money while you are playing it. So it is smart to play casino games with the lowest house edge.

Which casino games has the lowest house edge, casino games house edge.

This is how the house edge is calculated

I will try to maker this paragraph as easy as possible for you. The house edge is the result of all possible payouts divided by all possible outcomes (results). The house edge calculation is different for every game. For blackjack it is hard to calculate the house. And for roulette it is much easier to calculate the house edge. I think it is not interesting to show you all calculations. But it is easy to show you a simple calculation so you know a bit how things work.

Example of a house edge calculation

In this simple calculation I will use a dice. A dice has 6 sides and on those 6 sides are 6 different numbers 1,2,3,4,5 and 6. We are going to throw one dice and you have to predict which number the dice is going to show. When you have the correct number you win 5x your bet (including your bet amount)

This is the house edge in this example

You have a 1 out of 6 chance of predicting the correct number because there are 6 numbers and only one number can be the winning number.

We pay you 5 to 1 (so when you bet €10 and you predicted the correct number you receive €50)

In this example the house edge is 1 – (5/6) x 100% = 16,76%

This is a very interesting house edge for the casino because the average bet on each number will be the same when you look at a long period. When the casino pays you 6x your bet the house edge of this game is 0%. This is not interesting for the casino because they do not make a profit on this game.

Which casino games has the lowest house edge, casino games house edge.

What is the difference between the payout percentage and the house edge at a casino?

When you visit an online casino or a land-based casino you probably see payout percentages at the games you play. At slot machines you can always check the payout percentage. This is the percentage the games in average pays you out when on every euro or dollar you play. The payout percentage is almost the same as the house edge. The house edge is 100% minus the payout percentage. When a certain game has a 90% payout percentage the house edge is 100% – 90% = 10%.

The higher the payout percentage the happier the player is. And the casino is happy when you play games with a low payout percentage.

The 7 casino games with the lowest house edge

Underneath I am going to give you the 7 online casino games with the lowest house edge. Keep notice that the house edge is based on averages. And the house edge is calculated on the perfect strategy. Players that play stupid and inpatience will not get the lowest house edge. Play the best strategy and you will increase your winning chances at the following online casino games

Video poker (jack or better variant) – up to 0,44%

When you want to play the game with the lowest house edge I recommend you to try the video poker game jacks or better. To reach the lowest house edge you need to play the right strategy and you need to play with max bet (5 coins). Jacks or better is a very popular game in las vegas and at online casinos in the united states. This game is only available at machines at land-based casinos or on digital machines at online casinos. It is not a table game and everything in this game is automatically runned.

All the online casinos you find on our website offer you a few different video poker games. Check out our top 10 recommended online casinos here.

Blackjack – up to 0,5%

One of the most popular casino games is blackjack. This game is popular because it is exciting and it is pretty easy to play. When you play the correct blackjack strategy the house edge of this game is very low. So you have a high chance to win money while playing blackjack. Please keep an eye on the strategy and know when to buy, pass, split and double. At online casinos you can play blackjack on machines, animated table games or you can play blackjack on live casino tables.

Pontoon – between 0,4% and 0,71%

Pontoon is actually a popular variant on the normal blackjack. It is blackjack without the 10’s. This is of course a big disadvantage for you as a player. But pontoon compensates this. At pontoon you win directly when you have blackjack. En you can double your bet on a split card. At a lot of the online casinos you find on our website you can play pontoon at the live casino. Keep notice that there could be slight changes in rules at each casino or each game of pontoon.

Video slots at online casinos – up to 1%

I think online video slot games are the most popular games at online casinos. You find over 500 different video slot games at the average online casino. So you can choose a lot of different games. And of course they all have a different house edge. There are a few online slots with a minimum house edge of 1% or 2%. Game suppliers like netent and williams interactive offer a selection of games with a very low house edge. Online casinos can offer a low house edge on video slots because they have much lower costs than land-based casinos.

A few popular video slots with a low house edge are: volcano riches, starburst, glitz and raging rhino

Baccarat – between 1,06% and 1,04%

This is a very popular casino game. Baccarat is also called punto banco. This game is very popular at land-based casinos. At online casinos it is getting more and more popular also. It is also popular because it has a relative low house edge when you follow the perfect strategy. The game is also popular because of its speed. Keep notice that the house edge is low when you play on banker (1,06% house edge) or on player (house edge 1,04%(. It is not smart to bet on tie because the house edge increases to 14,36% in that case.

You can play the casino games with the lowest house edge at the underneath reliable online casinos.

French roulette – 1,35% (on even money bets)

Roulette has a lot of different variants. The french roulette game with the la partage rule is the most interesting one because it has a house edge of 1,35%. You have a 1,35% house edge when you place money on even money bets. Even money bets are bets like black/ red or even/ odd. When you start placing other bets you have a house edge of 2,7% at french roulette.

Pai gow poker – 1,46%

This is a game that is not very popular at online casinos. But its popularity is growing the last years. Pai gow poker is very popular at land-based casinos in las vegas and atlantic city. At pai gow poker you receive 7 cards and with those cards you need to make 2 poker hands. 1 hand of 5 cards and the other one with the other 2 cards. The dealer does exactly the same. And when you win with both hands you receive double your bet.

Here are the casino games with the highest house edge

On this page you find the 7 casino games with the lowest house edge. This are games where you have a higher chance of winning money. But of course there are also casino games with a relative high house edge. If you want to increase your chances of winning money I would avoid these games.

  • Slot machines at land-based casinos – up to 15%

  • Keno – up to 29%

  • Money wheel – up to 22%

  • Three card poker variant – 7,28%

  • American roulette – 5,26%

When you play table games we recommend you to stay away from side bets. Side bets will increase the house edge drastically. At blackjack you can place side bets during the normal game. Other casino games with side bets are roulette and three card poker. Please do not place side bets when you want to have a high chance of winning money at an (online) casino.

Casino games house edge

Each game inside the casino has an in-built advantage for the house. It is the factor that supplies casinos with their gaming profits. Around 18% of the cash 'drop' in casinos is retained as profit, or 'take'. This means that 18% of the money a casino gets to put down the shute on the gambling tables is pure gaming profit. (averaged out over a period of time)

GGG advises that bets with a house edge greater than 3% should be avoided. Playing with a good strategy in all the casino games mentioned will keep you below this figure. Below we tell you how to do that.

1%

House edge for UK casino games
GAME CASINOS HOUSE EDGE CHARACTERISTICS
roulette 136 1.39-2.78% no skill. Volatile
blackjack 136skill important
casino stud poker 136 2.5% negligible skill factor
punto banco 10 1.17-1.36% no skill. Acquired taste.
Craps 7 0.7-16% skill required. Complex. Volatile.
Prorgessive poker 100 3.45% no skill.
Sic bo 5 2.78-18.98% no skill.
Money wheel 5 11.11-24.07% no skill.

In each casino game there are several ways to bet and each bet is paid at odds. (i.E. You get back something times your stake money as well as your stake money) the casino edge, or advantage, or vig., is created by making those odds lower that the true odds (the real odds of what you just bet on).

Roulette of the sort played in british casinos allows for the player to place 'even chance' bets. They are high, low, red, black, odd and even. As zero is green and none of these, then none of these bets is paid out as a winner when zero comes up. However the player gets to retain half of their bet. This brings the house edge down to around 1.39%. GGG advice is to play 'even chance' bets if you are new and want to learn. They have the problem of being dull and also offer little chance to win in an evening's play. The normal house advantage from playing the numbers in roulette is 2.78% . I.E. A single chip placed on a winning number should return 37 chips to break even but it returns 36 instead. The edge is 1/37.

Double zero or american . The 'double zero' game as played in the U.S and other countries under the guise of 'american roulette' has a total of 38 numbers (' 0 ', ' 00 ' and 1 - 36 ). The payout odds are the same as the single zero game and so the edge on a single number is 5.40% i.E. A single chip placed on a winning number should return 38 chips to break even but it returns 36 instead. The edge is 2/38.
As an aside, there are two other differences.

  1. No half stake return or en prison (french game) rule. When either ' 0 ' or ' 00 ' occurs, all even chance bets lose!

  2. A single chip bet covering the four numbers 0 , 1 ,2, 3 on a single ' 0 ' roulette wheel is paid at 8-1 and maintains the 2.78% house edge. Here however, because of the ' 00 ', the chip now covers 00 , 0 , 1 ,2, 3 , which is five numbers and paid out at 6-1. This is a vig. Of 7.89% .

Blackjack gives the player a decision that affects the outcome almost every hand. Many of these decisions are so simple that players get them right most of the time. However, around 15% of the time the players differ from the choice of play that is mathematically correct. So, from playing perfectly, which gives the house just under 1% advantage, general play by punters pushes that figure up to 3% . GGG advice is to learn some basic strategy and really stick to it. The gods of chance do not look favourably on gamblers who try to buck the odds all the time.

Blackjack with one deck, dealer stands on soft 17, doubling allowed on any first two cards and not after splitting, is an even game. I.E. No vig. At all. You will not find this anywhere in the world but that was how it was played back in the early 1960s . NOTE>

I magine playing with the conditions in the NOTE above. Now add any of the following that applies to the game you are in and you'll be able to work out what the edge is against you;

  • Two decks - casino's edge goes to 0.3%

  • Four decks - vig. Is 0.5%

  • Six decks - vig. Is 0.6%

  • Restricting doubling down to 9,10,11 - lose another 0.1%

  • No doubling down on soft hands - lose another 0.1%

  • Allow doubling down after splitting (some places) hands - gain 0.2%

  • Allow restricted doubling down after splitting hands - gain 0.1%

  • Lose all to a dealer's blackjack - lose another 0.1%

  • No re-splitting (common) - lose another 0.1%

S o you can see how the casino vig. Is reached. The standard british 6-deck BJ game suffers a house edge of 0.8% because (six decks -0.6%, restricted doubling -0.1%, no double soft hands -0.1%, lose all to dealer's natural -0.1%, double after split +0.1%).

If you are playing in the UK today then the rules are a little more generous. Double after splitting and infinite re-splitting (including aces) and other normal UK rules give a house edge very close to 0.5%.

casino stud poker

Casino stud poker is a poor cousin of real poker. Very clever people have worked out that there is an extremely small difference in the chances of winning a hand by using the knowledge that you have at your disposal. I.E. The cards that you can see the house vig. Is 2.5% .

Never raise with anything less than ace-king-J-9-4 . If you play blind the house edge is 16.6% which works out at 5½% of your average stake.

According to the paper 'an analysis of caribbean stud poker' by peter griffin and john M. Gwynn jr., which appears in the book finding the edge in the perfect situation of having 7 colluding players it would be possible to narrow down the dealer's unseen cards to just 16. Using a computer to analyze all 1820 possible 4-card sets out of 16 the player would have an advantage of 2.3%. In a six player game the house would still have an edge of 0.4%. Unfortunatley the internet casinos usually only have 3 player spots.

For you to have a break even equity at the jackpot side bet in an UK casino, the meter would have to be at least £263,205. If you are playing a £5 initial poker bet, your average bet will be about £10 and your vig. Against you about 25 pence. So to have an even equity across both bets the jackpot prize will have to be 25% above £263,205 which is £329,006. Above this value you will technically have a vig. In your favour but most of the equity is tied up in winning first prize which is 650,000 to 1.

Punto banco has three bets, bank, player and egalite. Playing bank gives the house a 1.17% edge. And player gives them 1.36%. The real odds of the egalite bet is 9.47-1 but the casino offers you 8-1 (9 for 1) and thus racks up a massive 14% edge here. GGG recommends you never play the egalite bet!

Craps is by far the most complicated and interesting game in the casino and that is why it is dying out. If you learn how to play it, learn to play the low vig. Bets and you will last longer, have more fun and have a better chance of winning.
