EA's lost casino royale game

Back in 2005, with daniel craig officially announced as the new 007, EA scrapped an in-development original videogame based on pierce brosnan and switched tack to quickly create an adaptation of "from russia with love" starring sean connery. In parallel, the company also started work on a movie tie-in game based on "casino royale".
Before cameras rolled on the film, EA had access to the shooting script, set designs, production drawings, location information and costume designs. This enabled the development team to start work on the 3D models and game concepts in late 2005, a couple of months ahead of daniel craig shooting his first scenes as 007.
Concept artwork and some 3D models for "casino royale" were complete even before EA's latest game, "from russia with love", had hit the shelves. Unlike activision's eventual title "quantum of solace" in 2008, that included missions based on "casino royale", EA had planned to set the game in third-person perspective - much like their blockbuster title "everything or nothing".
In recruitment advertisements posted during the early days of the project, EA boasted direct ties with the movie's production team, including daniel craig and the rest of the cast, director martin campbell, the script and marketing campaign.
EA had expected to release the game on the next generation videogame platforms on the same day as the movie hit theatres. At the time, microsoft's xbox 360 had only just been launched and sony's playstation 3 was still waiting in the wings. The nintendo revolution platform eventually turned in to the wii. It was expected that "casino royale" was going to be a launch title for the PS3 in europe.

A month later, in january 2006, it was leaked that although the project was about 15% into development, production of the next generation platforms was been cancelled. Speculation mounted that the title had fallen behind schedule on the new platforms. Development focus would shift to the current-gen consoles, xbox and PS2, for which EA had just released "from russia with love".
News of the game's existence started to become widely known in january 2006, but a few months later in may 2006, a bombshell was dropped on 00-gamers: activision were taking over the james bond videogame licence, despite EA having recently extended their option until 2010. Activision paid a reported $50m for the rights. EA stated that they were making a strategic decision to move away from licenced franchises, but rumours circulated that the "casino royale" game was going to miss its release schedule and MGM were unhappy about the prospect of lost revenue. The axe fell immediately on the "casino royale" project at EA. The shift of rights to activision would not become exclusive until 2007, ruling out the new developer bringing a title to market in-line with the move.
MI6 can now reveal some of the early 3D designs for levels based around the venice in EA's ill-fated "casino royale" game.

Casino royale was a planned tie-in video game to the james bond film of the same name. The game was planned to be on the playstation 3 (where it would serve as a launch title in europe), xbox 360, and nintendo wii. The game also would have been developed by EA and was set to release on november 17th, 2006, the same day as the film would release in theaters in the united kingdom.

Development
On january 30th, 2006, EA confirmed that a casino royale video game was in development. The james bond fan website, MI6-hq.Com had confirmed that 3D models and concept art was already done and that the game had begun development before the james bond video game, from russia with love hit store shelves in 2005. [1] the development of casino royale was very short lived as on may 3rd, 2006, an article from variety had shown that MGM and EA has ended their contract to make james bond games due in part to the poor sales of from russia with love. [2] also on may 3, 2006, MGM and activision had struck a deal that would allow activision to make future james bond games through 2014. [3] the shift in the contract would not kick-in until september of 2007. This prompted activision to not pick up the casino royale tie-in game. Casino royale was rumored to have been around 15% complete before its cancellation.
Gameplay
Casino royale would have players play as james bond from a third person position as they would navigate the events of the movie. Voice overs would have been provided by the actors who played their respective roles in the film. The concept art that has surfaced shows the film's final act in which james bond attempted to save his love vesper lynd from drowning while a building collapses in venice.

It's now on the xbox one in game preview and attracted over a million players in its first week. The hype for this game is unreal and it's pretty much the quintessential battle royale game.
100 players drop into a huge open world map and you have to loot weapons, gear and medical supplies to survive and be the last man standing and win that all-important chicken dinner. It's rough around the edges (it's still in the fairly early stages of the preview program), but it's the one you want to play. It's the one everyone wants to play. ($29.99)
Fortnite battle royale
Fortnite is a game of two halves, and the battle royale portion of it has been broken off and is completely free to play. Developer epic games is monetizing through cosmetic pack in-game purchases, but if you don't want to spend, you don't have to.
It follows the traditional battle royale formula of dropping 100 players into a large map to loot, survive and emerge as the last man standing. It uses the same tech underneath as PUBG, but on the outside, it's quite different. What's important though is that it plays really well and it's a lot of fun.
Fortnite is somewhat cartoony in appearance, with a cutesy charm that doesn't necessarily fit with blowing someones head off. The unique aspect to fortnite is that you can scavenge resources to build quite elaborate structures as you move around the map. Building can give you the edge in the later stages, for sure.
Fortnite has enjoyed a recent massive surge in popularity and xbox players can now squad up with their buddies on PC and on the newly launched mobile version. It gets patches with new content and fixes almost weekly, and is now xbox one X enhanced and has both 4K as well as a lower-resolution 60 FPS mode. (free)
GTA V: motor wars
Delivered to GTA V online as part of the recent smuggler's run update, motor wars is essentially rockstar's first attempt at a battle royale mode in its games. And let's face it, the map in GTA V is so massive it's absolutely perfect for it.
You still drop in from the sky, and you still have an ever decreasing battlefield to command and take out your opponents. But there's a heavy focus on vehicular combat, hence the name.
Future rockstar games will no doubt expand on the idea, but for now, it's a free update to one of the biggest, baddest games in recent years. You know it'll be good. ($59.99)
The culling
If ever the hunger games were to become a video game it would probably end up as the culling. It shrugs off the standard battle royale formula of huge maps and 100 players for a smaller, tighter experience with just 16 players at each time.
With the smaller map and pool, winning is a different process than other massive battle royale games. Long-range gun battles are few and far between, with close quarters combat instead being a focus as you hunt down your enemies.
The culling is no longer in active development, which means no further new maps or features, but the servers will continue to run for the foreseeable future. It's an interesting take on battle royale, though. ($24.99)
Minecraft
Wait. Seriously, wait! While you may not be a fan of the block building game, minecraft actually has an unofficial battle royale/hunger games mode, which is a bag of fun.
It's a similar concept, in which a number of players are spawned in to find loot, gear up and take down enemies. Better yet, since this is minecraft you're bound to find active servers with a large number of people online.
It's a simple, more basic form of battle royale, restricted by minecraft's mechanics, but what map builders and modders have been able to achieve is impressive. You'll want to stick to recognized, larger servers like mineplex to get the best, but go on in and have a blast. ($19.99)
The darwin project
The darwin project is battle royale, but not like you know it if you've played any of the other games on this list. For starters, there are only 10 players, not 100, and there's a heavy survival element to the game.
If anyone had made a video game version of the hunger games, darwin project would be a close fit.
What's also extra special about darwin project is the role of the show director. This can have profound changes on individuals or the game as a whole. And with mixer integration, when you're streaming your viewers can also change the course of the game. ($14.99)

Description
Based on the scripts of the 21st movie "casino royale" and the 22nd james bond movie of the same name as the game, it follows closely the story of those movies but elaborates many scenes and fills in some blanks.
In a first person shooter fashion, the player directs bond through the levels filled with many bad guys. To overcome those, bond has several different kinds of weapons at his disposal ranging from his trusted P99 to machine guns and full blown grenade launchers. But the levels are also filled with canisters that either explode upon shooting or vent gas that temporarily blinds the enemy. Bond can also perform a take down move which puts an enemy out silently. If bond is near enough to an enemy, a button press will initiate the corresponding mini-game in which the player needs to hit a circle with a crosshair in a short period of time. Is the player successful, the enemy is out of the play but when he fails to hit the mark in time, bond will be thrown away from the enemy and is vulnerable for a short period of time. In addition bond can duck into cover to avoid bullets and shoot blindly over it or look out of it to get the kill. Bond also automatically regenerates his health when not under fire.
Other obstacles in the levels are cameras, which can either be shot or disabled and electronic locks which need to be hacked in another mini-game. There arrows flash green or red on the screen and the player needs to press the corresponding button fast enough when it blinks green to input the right number into the keypad.
The game also features a multiplayer mode for up to 12 players with the following game modes:
- Bond versus: one player takes over the control of james bond and either needs to defuse two of the three bombs in the level or kill all six of the opposing team. In this mode bond can also see all enemies and has two lives.
- Golden gun: the first player to score 100 points wins the round. Points are earned by kills but if the player is holding the always visible power weapon called "golden gun", he scores 6 points per kill.
- Bond evasion: in this mode one member of the MI6-team randomly gets to be bond and needs to get to the escape point of the map to win the round for his team. Meanwhile the organization tries to stop him by either killing him or preventing him from reaching the escape points in time.

Quantum of solace on the xbox 360 sees you playing bond in a loosely based tie-in with the film of the same name while mixing in flashbacks to casino royale to lengthen the game out beyond the pivotal scenes in the movie.
The casino royale elements come into play as flashbacks rather than making you complete the casino royale film levels before moving on to qos and you'll get a good chunk of the way through qos before you have to start chasing down the bomber in the opening sequence of casino royale.
Now in the hands of activison rather than EA, the company has used the call of duty 4: modern warfare game engine and tweaked it to let you get "immersed in the bond universe", and you'll soon find that whether it's in the single player campaign or the multiplayer levels that that immersion won't take long.
The graphics aren't gears of war amazing, but they are certainly good enough to enjoy and the offering is improved by activision's attempt to make them look like characters from the film.
This coupled with voicing by the real actors and borrowing lines directly from the films means that the experience is certainly bond through and through if not following the film blow by blow.
The storyline follows key themes of the movie, however due to a number of one on one chases in the film, activision has had to throw in a number of extra bad guys wherever possible to give you a challenge. Without them it would be very dull and really just a series of chase sequences.
Playing in a first person mode you've got to beat the bad guys using the usual array of bond weaponry: pistols, machine guns, grenades, and sniper rifles.
There is a cover mode, which you'll be using virtually the entire time and it works well (not gears of war well) allowing you to dodge out of the way of oncoming bullets and it means you can aim, lock on and then shoot without too much threat to yourself.
Stay in the one place too long though and you'll soon be flushed out with grenades and flanking tactics, however any trained first person shooter player should be able to manage with the onslaught of action.
Just as the film used the same stunt men from the bourne films, activison has borrowed some moves from the bourne game out earlier in the year. Get close to a bad guy and you can opt to "take them down" by pressing a secondary button (randomly chosen) at the right time. Of course this being bond you need just the one hit and they are eliminated.
On the multiplayer it's very much your average multiplayer experience with a lot more death.
There are dedicated games beyond the usual every man for himself and the golden gun mode we played involves one of you having the golden gun, reminiscent of the killer N64 version of goldeneye. It might look like a regular revolver but its packs a punch like a missile launcher.
The multiplayer levels are fun, although spoilt by the fact that you can see everyone's movements on a map. There will be no hiding in a corner hoping no one will see you.
While quantum of solace is yet another first person shooter, which doesn't break the mould, it is quick and easy pick up and play fun.
It's a polished title, that will tie-in nicely with the film rather than being just a pointless cash-in, although don't expect the film to be repeated scene for scene. The opera scene for example is very different.
Bond fans will love it of course, but for the die-hard FPS fan, this really is call of duty just by a different name.
