Hundreds of angry gamblers at resorts world casino in queens have been busting slot machines in fits of frustration — but a regular claims he was falsely accused by security of attacking a one-armed bandit.
Almost 500 people have been arrested for criminal mischief, many for breaking slot machines, since the gambling mecca opened in 2011. But bronx resident pren mrijaj says the casino has gotten into the habit of accusing people of breaking the machines, and then detaining them until they pay up — “larceny by extortion.”
“at least 150 people have been improperly detained by casino personnel,” mrijaj alleges in his bronx supreme court lawsuit, which is seeking class-action status.
Bitter bettors bashing slot machines is not unheard of — but seems to be more of an east coast phenomenon, casino security expert alan zajic told the post, noting the display or “belly” glass on the machines can be vulnerable.
“if a person gets mad, they hit it with their bag or punch it with their fists and break it,” he said.
“I will tell you it tends to happen more often in markets on the eastern seaboard,” he said, as opposed to las vegas.

The queens district attorney’s office confirmed 493 arrests for criminal mischief at resorts world since its 2011 opening.
Mrijaj was a high roller at the ozone park casino when security guards interrupted his game of roulette one night in 2018 and dragged him to the basement, he said in court papers.
Guards held him in the room for hours, accusing him of breaking a slot machine but refusing to show video evidence, said mrijaj, who denied damaging anything.
Police were called and mrijaj arrested, but the case was eventually dismissed. Mrijaj returned to resorts world more than a year later and even called to make sure he was OK to return.
He took another spin at the slots, and won. But as he was ready to cash in a $5,000 voucher, mrijaj claims he landed in the same basement room and was asked to pay more than $1,600 for the broken slot machine from the year before, court papers say.
He finally ponied up the cash after more than an hour.
Resorts world, which has more than 6,000 slot machines for its 10 million annual visitors, declined comment on the litigation, but said broken slot machines do happen, noting, “the heavy foot traffic and exciting atmosphere can cause some wear and tear on the machines.”

Hundreds of gamblers have broken slot machines at the facility since it opened in 2011, but mrijaj claims he is not one of them.

In a supreme court lawsuit against resorts world casino, mrijaj claims that a minimum of 150 people have been improperly detained by casino personnel due to the breaking of machines.
False accusations
According to the high roller, the casino accuses players on a regular basis of damaging machines and detains them until they pay up.
Alan zajic, a casino security expert, has said that it is not uncommon for players to break the slot machines on the east coast. The machines have a glass screen that is vulnerable and can easily be broken by a punch.
Mr. Zajic said: “if a person gets mad, they hit it with their bag or punch it with their fists and break it. I will tell you it tends to happen more often in markets on the eastern seaboard.”
Mrijaj’s case
In the case of mrijaj, casino security guards allegedly approached him one night in 2018. He says they took him to a basement area and held him for hours. They accused him of breaking a slot machine but failed to show video evidence of the so-called incident. Mrijaj denied casuing any damage.
The casino called the police and mrijaj was arrested. However, the case was eventually dismissed. About a year later, mrijaj returned to the casino after calling in advance to make sure he was allowed back.
Mrijaj paid the $1,600 so he could leave
He visited the slots area once again and won. Once he was ready to cash in a voucher for $5,000, mrijaj says security took him to the same room in the basement. He claims he was asked to pay $1,600 for the broken machine from the year prior. After over an hour, mrijaj paid the $1,600 so he could leave.
Resorts world casino in queens has not commented on the ongoing litigation. However, they did note that the heavy foot traffic of their facility and exciting atmosphere can cause wear and tear on machines.
Slot machines malfunction continues at four queens
Slot machines at four queens were still not fully operational as of midday monday in a five-day malfunction that caused nearly every slot machine to be out of service.
Gamblers at downtown’s four queens continued to be frustrated monday on the sixth day of an unexplained computer outage that affected many of the casino’s slot machines.
The state gaming control board reiterated that it would have no comment on what has become an ongoing active investigation.
Four queens representatives didn’t return calls or emails seeking an explanation.
Several machines were not printing vouchers monday and some players, like debbie odum, were waiting an hour or more for staff to cash them out.
“your voucher doesn’t work and you can’t get your money out once you win,” she said.
Odum, visiting from maryland, said she had been sitting at her machine an hour waiting to cash out.
Meanwhile, all systems were a go at binion’s, the four queens’ sister property, which also had slot machines out of service late last week.
Many of the slot machines had blue screens on friday with “out of service” messages on them. Some of the larger screens also displayed how much was paid to the machine’s last player.
Many of the slots had “out of order” tabs over the top of their currency validators to prevent players from putting money into a malfunctioning machine.
Several bar-top slots were operating, but the machines that distribute cash payouts also were malfunctioning resulting in the cash-out delays.
While many of the slots were inactive, crowds continued to gather around the table games that were played without disruption.
Four queens is an 18-story hotel with 690 rooms and a 27,269-square-foot casino. It has been owned by terry caudill’s TLC casino enterprises since 2003. The company also owns binion’s, acquired in 2008. Binion’s, across fremont street and casino center drive from four queens, has a 77,800-square-foot casino and in july opened 81 rooms as the boutique apache hotel, its historic name.

Bookman says she had to take a selfie to capture the unbelievable moment. The winnings from her spin on a slot machine at resorts world casino at aqueduct in jamaica were nearly $43 million, the game’s monitor indicated.
“it just had a big screen that say that I won 42.9 million,” bookman told CBS2’s hazel sanchez. “I just totally got numb and froze.”
But bookman’s elation was quickly deflated as casino workers flocked to the slot machine. It didn’t print out her prize voucher. The casino claimed the game was broken.
“when I was playing, it wasn’t no error,” bookman said. “so I feel, what did I win? What did I win? I had to win something.”
The new york state gaming commission, which regulates the casino, said it removed the slot machine from the floor and examined its log. The commission said: “the log proved that the player of the machine in question was entitled to a prize of $2.25. The display of $42.9M was clearly a display malfunction.”
The commission also noted that on the machine a small sign says: “malfunction voids all pays and plays.”
Bookman has hired an attorney.
“what does that mean? Does that mean that a casino can always say a machine is broken whenever someone hits and hits big,” said alan ripka, bookman’s lawyer.
Bookman said a resorts world spokesperson apologized to her for the inconvenience caused by the alleged malfunctioning machine. And she said to make it up to her, the casino offered her a steak dinner.
“and I’m like, ‘A steak dinner? Are you serious?'” she said. “I feel very robbed.”
The commission said the penny slot machine bookman was playing has a max payout of $6,500. The highest possible prize at resorts world casino is $500,000.
Bookman said she’s hoping the casino will do the right thing and give her more than a meal.
